Ukraine's First Lady proposes introducing food culture lessons in schools

Ukrinform
Ukraine's First Lady, Olena Zelenska, is urging communities to hold food culture classes in schools to raise a healthy generation.

According to Ukrinform, Zelenska wrote this on Facebook.

"Our goal is not only to feed children with healthy food, but also to form an attitude to food. Schools can give children the first lessons in food culture. They can not only feed, but also raise a healthy and knowledgeable generation. It sounds like a cool goal that already unites the whole country. Let's achieve it together! "she wrote.

She recalled that the school nutrition reform has been launched in Ukraine, with thematic forums held in the last three months across the country: 24 regions, 1,438 communities and 3,000 participants listened to experts, asking questions and getting answers.

"We discussed the new menu and re-equipment of food units (and, of course, how to finance it), procurement and food quality, technological processes and safety issues. […] The National Foodservice Association demonstrated how school lunches should look like, preparing them for all those present," she added.

Zelenska also thanked the author of the dishes - chef Yevhen Klopotenko - and noted that the school menu has really reached the restaurant level.

The reform of school nutrition was initiated by the president's wife. An updated four-week menu for school canteens was presented in May this year. It includes 160 dishes. In particular, the amount of fruit and meat in the diet has increased.

New nutrition standards in educational and children's health and recreation facilities will become mandatory from 2022.
