Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People Refat Chubarov has sent a letter to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan thanking him for Turkey's support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity and for protecting the interests of the Crimean Tatar people.

Chubarov wrote about this on his Facebook page, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"In connection with the signing on April 10, 2021 of a framework agreement between the Government of Ukraine and the Government of the Republic of Turkey on cooperation in housing construction for the Crimean Tatar people and other privileged categories of Ukrainian citizens, I sent a letter to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan," he said.

According to Chubarov, the letter expresses gratitude on behalf of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people "for Turkey's unwavering support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, for its attention to protecting the rights and interests of the Crimean Tatar people, which has stayed under the occupation of Crimea by the Russian Federation for seven years."

Chubarov stressed that the Mejlis is trying to "create conditions for tens of thousands of Crimean Tatars, in conditions of forced residence outside Crimea, but within Ukraine, to be able not only to preserve their identity, but also to increase their professional and intellectual potential which they will be able to apply for the reintegration and development of Crimea liberated from Russian occupiers."

The letter states that the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people highly appreciates the efforts of the Republic of Turkey, also aimed at improving the living conditions of Crimean Tatars who, due to the threat to their life, were forced to leave Russia-occupied Crimea and live in mainland Ukraine.

"These include, in particular, participants in the Russian-Ukrainian war, political prisoners, activists of the Crimean Tatar national movement, public figures and politicians, journalists, university professors, civil servants, and others," the letter reads.

However, he said, the construction of housing in the ratio envisaged by the framework agreement (100 apartments in Kyiv, 200 apartments in Mykolaiv, and 200 apartments in Kherson) will not remove the severity of the housing problem in many Crimean Tatar families living in Kyiv, as well as other regions of Ukraine.

"The Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, respecting the decision adopted by the Governments of Ukraine and the Republic of Turkey and enshrined in the framework agreement between the Government of Ukraine and the Government of the Republic of Turkey on cooperation in housing construction for the Crimean Tatar people and other privileged categories of Ukrainian citizens, appeals, simultaneously with the implementation of this project on the construction of 500 apartments, to consider building an additional 500 apartments, concentrating them in the places of actual residence of Crimean Tatar IDPs, including the city of Kyiv," Chubarov said.
