The Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor (DRL) at the U.S. Department of State announces an open competition of projects in Ukraine, aimed at supporting environmental NGOs in Ukraine and promoting civic engagement of combat veterans.

“DRL’s goal is to support environmentally focused grassroots civic activism in Ukraine, particularly as it relates to corruption at the local level.  Expected outcomes should include a greater capacity of environmental activists and their allies, including journalists and lawyers, to advocate for policy solutions, build coalitions, engage the public, and protect themselves from attacks,” reads the statement posted on the website of the U.S. Department of State.

To this end, the U.S. allocates a $750,000 grant for the implementation of projects on terms offered to non-governmental organizations in Ukraine.

Another equivalent grant ($ 750,000) is provided for the initiative to promote civic engagement of combat veterans in Ukraine.

“The conflict in the Donbas region has created thousands of combat veterans in Ukraine.  Many of those returning from the conflict are experiencing a lack of adequate support and services,” the statement notes.

The expected outcomes include the creation of new opportunities for veterans to constructively contribute to society, the advancement of democratic structures in Ukraine that enhance the trust veterans have in government institutions, and increased veteran resilience to recruitment by violent radical groups.
