Fedorov: Ukraine to be first country to equate digital passports with traditional ones

Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine Mykhailo Fedorov has stated that Ukraine will be the first country in the world to legally equate digital passports with traditional ones.

On February 4, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine passed at first reading the bill which will allow the use of digital passports along with traditional ones.

"After the adoption of the necessary law, the brand of Ukraine as a digital state will be formed in the world. We will become the first country to legalize digital passports. It will also simplify internal processes for launching new digital products," Fedorov said, the Government portal reports.

It is noted that a biometric passport for travelling abroad and an ID card are available in the Diia mobile application. No additional devices are required to check the validity of a digital document. This can be done with any smartphone with the Diia app installed on it. A smartphone camera should be pointed towards the QR code of a digital document. This is a unique 3-minute identifier that allows checking a document against the data in the relevant registers.

Ukrainians can already use digital passports to receive mail, administrative, financial, banking services, etc.

In particular, digital passports can be used to open a bank account remotely in some banks, as well as to travel across Ukraine by train and plane. Documents in the Diia mobile application are already accepted at ten international airports of the country.

As reported, the Verkhovna Rada passed at first reading the bill on amendments to the Law of Ukraine “On the Unified State Demographic Register and Documents Proving Citizenship of Ukraine, Identity or Special Status”.
