Ukraine has aligned itself with the decision of the Council of the European Union to establish a global human rights sanctions regime.

“The Candidate Countries the Republic of North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Albania, the country of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidate Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the EFTA country Norway, member of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine, Armenia and Georgia align themselves with this Council Decision,” reads the declaration by the High Representative on behalf of the European Union on the alignment of certain countries concerning serious human rights violations and abuses.

The Council Decision, adopted on December 7, establishes a framework for targeted restrictive measures to address serious human rights violations and abuses worldwide.

The declaration notes that the countries will ensure that their national policies conform to this Council Decision. The European Union takes note of this commitment and welcomes it.

On December 7, the EU Foreign Affairs Council adopted a decision and a regulation establishing a global human rights sanctions regime.

The regime will allow to target individuals, entities and bodies – including state and non-state actors – responsible for, involved in or associated with serious human rights violations and abuses worldwide.

Restrictive measures will provide for a travel ban applying to individuals, and the freezing of funds applying to both individuals and entities. In addition, persons and entities in the EU will be forbidden from making funds available to those listed, either directly or indirectly.
