Ukraine to buy additional 1.2 million COVID-19 tests

Ukraine will purchase 1.2 million COVID-19 PCR tests (polymerase chain reaction) under a new agreement between the Ukrainian Health Ministry and UNICEF, the ministry's press service has reported.

"Together with a similar number (1.2 million) of kits for automated viral RNA extraction purchased under an agreement with the World Health Organization Ukraine, we are improving our capabilities to test patients with suspected COVID-19 in laboratory centers in all regions of Ukraine," Deputy Minister of Health Svitlana Shatalova said.

The relevant agreement between the Ukrainian Health Ministry and UNICEF Ukraine was signed as part of the Serving People, Improving Health Project with the World Bank Ukraine.

The ministry recalled that earlier, at the initiative of Health Minister Maksym Stepanov, the Ukrainian government had additionally allocated almost UAH 1.3 billion to increase the number of COVID-19 tests.

Stepanov said earlier that Ukraine should do more than 70,000 COVID-19 PCR tests per day by the end of the year.

As many as 821,947 COVID-19 cases were laboratory confirmed in Ukraine as of December 7, including 8,641 new cases on December 6.
