Court in Russia extends arrest of three Crimean Tatars until Jan 15

A court in Rostov-on-Don has extended for three months the arrest of three Crimean Tatars as part of the Hizb ut-Tahrir case (the Bilohirsk group), Crimean Solidarity has reported on Facebook.

"The Southern District Military Court extended the detention of Riza and Enver Omerov and Ayder Dzhepparov until January 15 next year," the report said.

The request to extend the arrest was preceded by the announcement by the prosecutor of the positive characteristics of the defendants, as well as documents confirming their permanent employment, place of residence and dependent children.

The defense requested that a non-custodial measure be taken. The lawyers said that their clients dot not want to hide from the court, but instead plan to prove their innocence. In addition, Enver Omerov is ill, he needs surgery, and staying in a pretrial detention center only worsens his condition.

However, the prosecutor demanded that the Crimean Tatars' detention be extended until January 2021, citing the fact that they could allegedly "hide from the court and damage the evidence."

On June 10, 2019, three people were arrested in the Bilohirsk district of the Russian-occupied Crimea. Enver Omerov (born in 1961) was detained on his way to Rostov-on-Don, where a trial was to take place against his son-in-law Rustem Ismailov, a participant in the first Simferopol group of the Hizb ut-Tahrir case. His son Riza Omerov (born in 1988) and a resident of the village of Zuya, Ayder Dzhapparov (born in 1980), were detained on the same day.
