UWC calls on world to condemn human rights violations in Russian-occupied Crimea

"On the International Day of the World's Indigenous People we call on the global community to condemn ongoing blatant human rights violations and political persecutions targeting Crimean Tatars in the occupied Crimea," the UWC wrote on its Facebook page on Sunday, August 9.

The International Day of the World's Indigenous People is a day of solidarity with indigenous peoples, which is observed on August 9 every year in accordance with the UN General Assembly resolution 49/214 of December 23, 1994.

In the spring of 2014, Russia used its armed forces to seize part of Ukraine's territory - the Crimean Peninsula. A "referendum" on the status of Crimea was held on March 16, 2014, and the peninsula joined Russia on March 18.

At the same time, Ukraine, the European Union, the United States and other countries did not recognize the results of the vote at the "referendum" and imposed sanctions on Russia.
