Ukraine has a firm position that efforts at the United Nations to protect women's rights and empowerment should be a priority task, and therefore fully endorses the UN General Assembly's political declaration approved on Monday to support the Beijing process, according to Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN Serhiy Kyslytsia.

"One of the priorities of Ukraine's work at the UN is the protection of women's rights and the achievement of gender equality. Therefore, Ukraine welcomes today's approval of the Political Declaration on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women," the Ukrainian diplomat told Ukrinform.

He stressed that the approval of the UN Political Declaration is an important step in achieving gender equality in the world. It also envisages the need for strengthening the protection of women and girls in armed conflicts, which is vital for Ukraine as it still lives in conditions of the Russian aggression. In addition, the Declaration supports the full, equal and meaningful participation of women in decision-making and peace processes, as well as mediation efforts, including in the prevention and settlement of armed conflicts.

The Political Declaration, approved on Monday by the UN General Assembly, reaffirms the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, as well as other commitments in the context of achieving gender equality and empowering women and girls. The document identifies 12 priority areas where urgent action is needed: women and poverty; education and training of women; women and health; violence against women; women and armed conflict; women and the economy; women's participation in decision-making processes; institutional mechanisms for women's improvement; the rights of women, women and the media; women and the environment, girls' rights.
