Only 14% of Ukrainians believe that it is necessary to agree to any compromises for the sake of peace, Director of the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation Iryna Bekeshkina has said.

She stated this while presenting the results of a survey titled "Ways to Achieve Peace in Donbas: Public Sentiment, Expectations, Warnings," according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"Of course, people want peace, and the position that peace in Donbas can be restored only by force is now shared by 16%. [...] The rest believe that it is necessary to resolve it peacefully. But it is very important here that only 14% are now ready to agree to any compromise for 'peace at any cost.' That is, people do not want 'peace at any cost'," Bekeshkina said.

She added that the principle of "agreeing to compromises, but not all of them" is supported by 57% of citizens in Ukraine's western regions, 53% in the center, 60% in the south, and 67% in the east.

According to Bekeshkina, residents of southern (24%) and eastern (18%) regions of Ukraine are more inclined to any compromises. The much lower percentage of such people is in central (10%) and western (13%) regions. At the same time, in the west (29%) and in the center (20%), there are more of those who believe that peace in Donbas can be restored only by force.

A nationwide public opinion survey was conducted by the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation jointly with Kyiv International Institute of Sociology from November 4 to 19, 2019 in 110 populated localities in all regions of Ukraine, except the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. In Donetsk and Luhansk regions, the poll was conducted only in territories controlled by Ukraine. A total of 2,041 questionnaires were collected during the field stage. The poll's margin of error does not exceed 2.3%. The survey was funded by the Delegation of the European Union to Ukraine.
