President Petro Poroshenko has called on Orthodox churches around the world to recognize the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.

He stated this during a speech after the completion of the liturgy at St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.

“We call on all global Orthodox churches to recognize it [the Orthodox Church of Ukraine] as sister, and to mention it under the name of the Most Holy Church of Ukraine, which has its chair in the historical city of Kyiv,” Poroshenko noted.

The president stressed that the Orthodox Church of Ukraine is an independent, autocephalous and local church. It is also a self-governing church.
