Moscow has settled over one hundred thousand Russians in Crimea

In 2014-2017, more than one hundred thousand Russians have been registered in the occupied Crimea.

This is stated in the study "Violations of the international humanitarian law and the right of Crimean Tatars to self-determination in the occupied Crimea" prepared by NGO “Crimea SOS”, which is available to Ukrinform.

"The Russian Federation actively encourages the resettlement of its population to the territory of Crimea. Thus, according to the official data of the Russian Federation, 102,898 Russians registered on the peninsula in 2014-2017. The report’s authors believe this figure is underrated as the Russian authorities understand they commit a war crime. According to other data, more than 200,000 people moved to the territory of Crimea only in the first three years since the beginning of the occupation," the study says.

As the report’s authors emphasize, such a “trend” is linked with the introduction of economic benefits, the provision of low-cost housing and other favorable living conditions for Russians.

"At the same time, the number of servicemen and officials who come from Russia grows, and Russian business structures actively enter the Crimean market through different investment projects," the authors underscore.

It is noted that since the occupation the Russian Federation has been actively pursuing a policy of population displacement aimed at ousting disloyal persons from the territory of the peninsula through deportation, entry ban and creation of "unbearable" living conditions on the territory of Crimea.

“As of September 2018, according to the official data of the Russian statistical services, 35,068 people left Crimea. According to unofficial data, this number varies between 50,000 and 100,000 people,” the report reads.
