Ukrainian Foreign Ministry checking video with Hungarian passports in Berehove

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry is verifying the authenticity of a video in which Ukrainian citizens are receiving Hungarian passports in Berehove, Zakarpattia region, and are asked to hide this fact from the Ukrainian authorities.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin said this after a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"I will meet with Peter [Szijjarto, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary] in New York - it was planned in advance. We will also discuss the new name of their authorized representative [...] Secondly, we know that there are always cases of the hidden issuance of passports [Hungarian passports to Ukrainian citizens]. We are currently verifying the authenticity of this video, since we have to do it as serious people. We proceed from the fact that it is authentic. I will show it to Szijjarto. I will say that if the consul has nothing to do, let him issue Hungarian passports to Hungarian citizens in Budapest," Klimkin said.

As reported, Hungarian passports are being issued to Ukrainian citizens in Hungary's consulate in Berehove, Zakarpattia region. The procedure is accompanied by a glass of champagne in honor of a second citizenship and instructions - not to notify the Ukrainian authorities about the receipt of documents. At the same time, Ukrainian citizens loudly swear allegiance to Hungary. Ukrinform received from its own sources a video recording of the specified procedure.

The owners of new Hungarian passports are advised to show a Ukrainian passport to Ukrainian border guards and a Hungarian passport to Hungarian border guards.

Dual citizenship is not currently recognized in Ukraine and, according to the law, is not allowed, first and foremost, for civil servants and deputies of all levels.

A draft law proposing changes to the current legislation on the citizenship of Ukraine was registered in the Verkhovna Rada on April 19. The document was submitted by President Petro Poroshenko. The draft law, among other things, expands the list of grounds for deprivation of Ukrainian citizenship. In particular, it is proposed that the grounds for the loss of Ukrainian citizenship should be the use of the passport of a foreign state during departure from or entry into Ukraine (or on the territory of Ukraine), which was recorded by the Ukrainian State Border Guard Service or another state body.
