Ukrainian border guards have detained at a section of the Zolochiv border service department in Kharkiv region a Russian citizen who tried to illegally cross the state border from Russia and subsequently asked for asylum in Ukraine, the press service of the Ukrainian State Border Guard Service has said.

"Border guards of the Kharkiv detachment detained a Russian born in 1994 as soon as he crossed the state border. While clarifying the circumstances of the violation, the man appealed to representatives of the State Border Guard Service with the request to grant him a refugee status," the statement reads.

It notes that the Russian explained during a conversation that he actively resisted aggressive state policy in his homeland and was persecuted by Russian law enforcement agencies for his political views and is now wanted in Russia. That is why, in order to save his life, the man decided to cross the state border outside a border crossing point and apply for refugee status.

After all procedures were completed, the Russian citizen was transferred to representatives of the migration service of Ukraine.
