Court leaves MP Savchenko in custody until Sept 10

The Shevchenkivsky District Court of Kyiv has upheld the petition of prosecutors to extend the measure of restraint for Ukrainian MP Nadiya Savchenko in the form of holding her in custody until September 10.

Investigating Judge Volodymyr Buhil announced the respective ruling late on Friday, July 13, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.

Immediately upon the arrival of the judge from the deliberation room, about ten supporters of Savchenko started shouting "Shame!" when the judge was reading out the ruling.

Lawyer Oleksandr Shadrin told the agency's correspondent that the court had extended the measure of restraint for Savchenko in the form of detention until September 10. The full text of the decision will be announced on July 16 at 08.30.

Shadrin also said that Savchenko's defense team would file an appeal and would also apply to the European Court of Human Rights.

As reported, on March 22, the Verkhovna Rada gave its consent to the prosecution, detention and arrest of Ukrainian MP Nadiya Savchenko.

Savchenko is charged with committing actions aimed at the violent overthrow of the constitutional order and seizure of state power, encroachment on the life of a state or public figure, preparation for a terrorist attack, assistance to a terrorist organization and illicit handling of weapons, ammunition and explosives.

On March 23, the Shevchenkivsky District Court in Kyiv selected the measure of restraint for Savchenko in the form of holding her in custody until May 20 without the right to post bail. On May 15, it extended the arrest for two more months, until July 13.
