PEN America demands to immediately release Ukrainian film director Oleg Sentsov.

A corresponding letter was sent to Russian President Vladimir Putin and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

“As Russia prepares to host the World Cup in the coming weeks, the eyes of the world will be on the country... In the spirit of this unifying global event, we therefore urge you to take this opportunity to make a powerful statement by releasing Oleg Sentsov immediately and unconditionally. His life depends on it," the letter reads.

The appeal was signed by 48 people, including writers Herta Müller, J. M. Coetzee, Salman Rushdie, Jonathan Franzen, Margaret Atwood, Paul Auster, singer Patti Smith, composer Stephen Sondheim and others.
