Ukraine’s largest telescope was installed on the territory of the Mechnikov University observatory in the village of Mayaky of Odesa region.

The diameter of the telescope mirror is 80 centimeters, observatory director Serhiy Andrievsky notes.

"It was the climax of our work in view of our opportunities. We had to find people who would make optics, mechanics, electronics. And we did it. Today the telescope works for the needs of the space surveillance," Andrievsky said, grad.ua website reports.

The experts note that the uniqueness of the Odesa telescope is that it was created at the observatory itself. The funds for the creation of the device were donated by the patrons fond of astronomy.

Five telescopes are located on the territory of the university’s observatory. Three of them already operate, while two more are planned to be launched in the near future.
