Some 76% of families in Ukraine have only one child, although most people speak about the desire to have two or more children.

Director of Ukraine's Institute for Demography and Social Studies Ella Libanova said at an All-Ukrainian family forum in Kyiv on Wednesday, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"How can we accept that despite the fact that only 17% of young people say they want to have one child and 55% of young people say they want to have two, three or four children, 76% of families have only one child?" Libanova said.

She stressed that Ukrainian families want to have children, but "poverty in families with children is one-and-a-half times higher than poverty in families without children."

In addition, she emphasized that 72% of young people say that family happiness is a major asset to them.
