Ukraine, Romania to create new checkpoints - Klimkin

Ukraine and Romania are working on the opening of new checkpoints on the joint border, including pedestrian ones.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin said this at a joint press conference with Romanian Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu in Chernivtsi on Thursday, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"Today we, with Teodor [Melescanu], said that there should also be pedestrian crossing points. I hear that someone who wants to visit relatives living at a distance of 15 kilometers has to travel 150 kilometers. Of course, this is terrible. Therefore, we will work on such provisions, of course, throughout the entire border section, but especially in mountainous areas. We have also agreed on this," he said.

Klimkin recalled that there was currently only one international crossing point in Chernivtsi region on the 235-kilometer-long Ukrainian-Romanian border.

Melescanu, in turn, said that the Romanian side had already completely prepared the infrastructure for two new checkpoints - Diakivtski-Racovat and Krasnoylsk-Vicovu de Sus, which, according to him, should be opened in the first half of 2018.
