Researchers of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine urge demographers not to take into account the official Soviet censuses of the population when calculating human losses and consider that 3.9 million victims are a significantly underestimated number.

Historians insist that the number of victims of the Holodomor in Ukraine is at least 7 million people, director general of the National Museum "Memorial of Victims of the Holodomor" candidate of historical sciences Olesia Stasiuk said during a press conference at the Ukrinform news agency.

"The demographers’ estimation of number of the Holodomor victims is significantly understated as the official statistics are taken as a basis," she stressed.

The director general of the National Museum "Memorial of Victims of the Holodomor" noted that the resolution, which had been adopted by the researchers upon the results of the first international conference in October 2016, stated that "the number of human losses caused by the Holodomor in Ukraine is at least 7 million people inside Ukraine and 3 million people more beyond its borders." According to Stasiuk, the researchers presented during the conference the new documents, which allow confirming a much larger number of victims.

Professor of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, member of the board of the NGO “Memorial” Volodymyr Serhiychuk stressed at the press conference that 13 categories of losses had not been considered when estimating the Holodomor losses. “In particular, the people, who fled from hunger abroad in those years and were shot on the border, were not taken into account,” he said.
