Von der Leyen responds to Spanish PM's criticism over migrant influx to Ceuta
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen praised Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez for his handling of the influx of 60,000 migrants into the Spanish exclave of Ceuta.

According to Euractiv, as reported by Ukrinform, von der Leyen expressed her views in a letter dated August 3.

"Both Spanish and Moroccan authorities have managed this efficiently and effectively, successfully preventing illegal movement onwards to mainland Spain and Europe," the letter states.

The letter was sent in response to a message from Sánchez on Saturday, in which he criticized what he described as the "prejudice" and selfishness of other European leaders.

According to the European Commission president, the actions of the Spanish government were crucial in preventing the situation from escalating and avoiding "the tragic and unnecessary loss of even more lives."

Addressing concerns raised by several European leaders, von der Leyen also said the crisis should serve as a catalyst for strengthening migration control across the European Union.

"From this incident, it is clear that we must do more to further strengthen our borders at critical points, both with vigilant monitoring and the use of physical barriers where needed," she emphasized.

As Ukrinform previously reported, the leaders of 22 European Union member states called for an immediate and coordinated European response to the events in the Spanish exclave of Ceuta.

Spain's Ministry of the Interior announced on July 31 that nearly 50,000 migrants had crossed the border from Morocco into Ceuta within a 24-hour period. The Spanish government later stated that more than 48,300 people who had entered Ceuta illegally from Morocco had since been returned.
