Ankara to introduce ‘red zones’, tighten security measures during NATO Summit

“The routes to be used for the summit are Esenboğa Airport and Etimesgut Airport. The Söğütözü neighborhood where the President’s complex is located, the areas around the hotels where summit participants will stay, and the transit routes will be designated as red zones. Vehicle and pedestrian access to the areas in question will be controlled,” the report said.

In connection with the summit, demonstrations and mass marches will be prohibited in Ankara from July 1 to July 15.

Approximately 40,000 police officers and gendarmerie personnel will be deployed to provide security during the event. Plainclothes officers will also be involved. In addition, authorities will install extra surveillance cameras at 100 strategically important locations to reinforce the city’s existing video monitoring network.

Temporary restrictions will also be imposed on some international flights during the summit period, while security checks at entry points to Ankara will be intensified.

Separate security plans are being developed for cultural events and sightseeing programs involving the spouses of heads of state and government attending the summit.

Preparations are being carried out with lessons learned from last year’s NATO Summit, which hosted approximately 6,000 participants.

As previously reported by Ukrinform, the President of the United States is expected to attend the 36th NATO Summit, which will take place in Türkiye in early July.
