Romanian president: Drone that hit house may have been downed by Ukrainian air defense
According to Ukrinform, this was reported by the Romania Journal.
“As they passed through Ukrainian territory, some of them were shot down, and one of them, probably hit over the city of Reni, changed its trajectory and came towards Galati,” said the Romanian president.
He emphasized that Russia bears responsibility for this incident, adding that residents can return to their apartments, with the exception of the family that was directly affected by the explosion.
Dan also clarified that the two victims currently in the hospital have minor injuries and are already recovering.
According to him, experts are currently continuing to examine and analyze evidence collected at the scene.
“I went with the police, Criminal Investigations, and an investigation is open, samples from the scene are being investigated. At least 30 kg is their estimate and classic explosives were used,” the president said.
Dan added that intercepting drones using aircraft is not the most effective solution, and that Romania is working on developing more effective capabilities.
As reported by Ukrinform, on the night of May 29 in the city of Galați in eastern Romania near the border with Ukraine, a drone crashed into a multi-story residential building, injuring two people.
According to the Romanian Ministry of National Defense, the drone entered Romanian territory as part of a larger group, but only one aircraft crashed into the residential building and exploded upon impact. Another drone without an explosive payload was found in Maramures County in northwestern Romania.
Romanian President Nicușor Dan announced the closure of the Russian consulate in Constanța and declared the Russian consul persona non grata.
President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine would support Romania following the Russian drone attack on a residential building and would help strengthen air defense.
