Kyiv does not support the candidacy of former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as a potential negotiator for the European Union, a proposal reportedly put forward by Russia.

This was stated by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha on Monday morning ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“We do not support such a candidacy at all,” Sybiha said.

He added that there are “many other worthy leaders” who could perform this role.

As previously reported, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas noted that Gerhard Schröder is a well-known lobbyist for Russian companies, adding that it is therefore unsurprising that Vladimir Putin would want him to act as an EU negotiator.
