Hungary has for too long been a major obstacle to maintaining unity among EU member states in making important decisions, and the new government should quickly return the country to constructive cooperation within the European Union.

This was stated in an interview with Ukrinform by Member of the European Parliament Petras Austrevicius.

“I'm looking forward to seeing Hungary again being back as a constructive partner. It wasn’t. It became an obstacle which has long obstructed so many issues related to geopolitical, geostrategic interests of the European Union, and indeed, much related to Ukraine,” Austrevicius said.

He believes the damage caused to the EU by Orban is enormous.

“Orban's government broke the principle of solidarity. It broke a principle of good neighborly relations with Ukraine, and indeed – it's proven now – the government had been leaking sensitive information to our rival, meaning Russia, and probably China,” the MEP stated.

In his view, the issue of possible cooperation between Orban and China deserves further investigation.

“I'm looking forward to a major shift from previous constraints, problems, and a non-cooperation-based approach. Indeed, the government of Hungary must act. The declarations up to now have been good, but I'm looking forward to a formal relief of embargo, the policy change,” Austrevicius emphasized.

He expressed hope that Hungary will return to a constructive format of cooperation within the EU.

As reported earlier, the EU aims to resolve as quickly as possible the issue of granting a €90 billion loan to Ukraine and to adopt the 20th package of sanctions against Russia following the election victory of Peter Magyar in Hungary.

At the same time, Magyar himself stated that he supports the agreement on providing Kyiv with €90 billion, concluded in December last year, which allowed Hungary, as well as the Czech Republic and Slovakia, to opt out so that they would not be obliged to contribute funds.

Magyar also believes that current Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who will remain in office for another month, will lift the “technical veto” on the €90 billion loan for Ukraine if oil supplies via the Druzhba pipeline are restored.
