Kallas: Russia must be forced to stop pretending to negotiate and agree to peace
The head of European diplomacy said this in an interview with Ukrinform.
According to Kallas, Russia “is strongly opposing peace right now.” In this context, she noted that “we see they are saying one thing but actually actively bombing Ukraine and not agreeing to any ceasefire,” while Ukraine agreed to an unconditional ceasefire a year ago.
“We have to put them in a situation where they change their calculus and move from pretending to negotiate to actually coming down and negotiating to end this war. Unfortunately, we are not there yet,” she stated.
Commenting on Russia’s constant threats against the Baltic states, particularly her native Estonia, Kallas noted that Europeans are constantly preparing for various threats from Russia.
“We are constantly preparing for different threats that come from Russia. It is clearly a long-term threat. It does not go away even if the war stops here,” Kallas noted.
As reported by Ukrinform, the ISW notes that successful strikes by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on Russian rear areas have intensified discussions within Russian military circles regarding the need for a swift end to hostilities against Ukraine.
