Lawmaker: Ukraine’s EU integration should not be held back by other candidates or Hungary

Negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union should not depend on the pace of integration of other candidate countries, and the position of individual member states, particularly Hungary, should not become an obstacle to Ukraine’s progress.

This was stated in a comment to Ukrinform by Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze, Chair of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on EU Integration.

According to her, countries that are already integrated into the European economic area may move more quickly toward membership, but this should not affect Ukraine.

“These countries are much more prepared for EU membership today. They are already part of the European economic community and have the necessary legislation,” Klympush-Tsintsadze noted.

At the same time, she emphasized that a scenario in which several countries simultaneously become EU members is a positive one.

“This could be either a phased process or even the simultaneous accession of Ukraine, the Western Balkan countries, and other candidates,” said the MP.

The chair of the relevant committee emphasized that this should not hinder Ukraine’s path toward European integration.

“This is not an obstacle to our progress toward the European Union,” she stressed.

Separately, Klympush-Tsintsadze commented on Hungary’s position regarding Ukraine’s European integration, calling for the avoidance of public tensions that play into the hands of hostile propaganda.

“We must avoid commenting on any matters concerning Hungary as much as possible so as not to provide grounds for propaganda,” she noted.

At the same time, she said, most EU countries are ready to act to preserve the Union’s unity.

“The European Union—in fact, its 26 member states—is now prepared to use all legal instruments to prevent the EU from becoming destabilized from within,” Klympush-Tsintsadze emphasized.

She added that Ukraine should focus on its own progress toward membership and the implementation of necessary reforms. “Our task is to move forward and not allow external factors to slow down this process,” she concluded.

As reported, according to media sources, EU countries are considering several options to prevent Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán—or any other problematic leader—from obstructing the bloc’s work in the future.
