Tusk: Nawrocki’s veto of SAFE initiative brings joy only to Russia

The Polish government will adopt a resolution to implement programs under the SAFE initiative, despite President Nawrocki’s veto.

According to a Ukrinform correspondent, Prime Minister Donald Tusk made this statement during an extraordinary meeting of the Polish government.

As Tusk emphasized, everyone in Poland is now wondering whether Nawrocki’s decision constitutes “treason, the work of lobbyists, or a lack of common sense.”

He stressed that Nawrocki’s decision is “a serious setback for everyone who worked on the major ‘Armed Poland’ project.”

Tusk recalled that it was the Polish government that, together with Greece, initiated the SAFE project in May 2024 and convinced Brussels and other European capitals of the need to implement it.

The Polish prime minister noted that this involves a beneficial European loan to finance purchases from Polish defense industry companies for the Polish army, border guards, and police.

“It is no coincidence that the SAFE project involves the Finns, Lithuanians, Estonians, Latvians, Romanians, and, of course, Poland, as these are the countries that have made the greatest efforts to protect themselves, their borders, their neighbors, and all of Europe from potential Russian aggression. That is precisely what this project was intended to serve. And it is no coincidence that people across Europe are asking today what happened and how this is possible. Only in Russian newspapers is there a full understanding of the presidential veto,” Tusk emphasized.

He noted that, due to the president’s veto, the Polish government will adopt a resolution to implement the “Armed Poland” program, which the SAFE initiative will fund.

“It will be more difficult, sometimes slower, and we will have to make significantly more effort to convince everyone involved in this process. There will be no relevant legal provisions, so we will have to rely on our own strength, energy, and determination. But we will do it, and this resolution will allow us to launch the ‘Armed Poland’ program,” Tusk emphasized.

As reported by Ukrinform, Polish President Karol Nawrocki announced on Thursday evening that he would not sign the law implementing the SAFE initiative in Poland.

Earlier, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called on political opponents to stop playing “political games” and urged Polish President Karol Nawrocki to sign the law implementing the SAFE defense initiative.
