Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and human rights activist Oleksandra Matviichuk have become the first laureates of the European Order of Merit, established by the European Parliament.

According to Ukrinform, the winners of the newly created award were announced by Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, the institution’s press service reported.

“Europe has always been built by people. Bridging divides, breaking barriers, overthrowing dictatorships and overcoming crises for a better future for our continent. This European commitment deserves to be celebrated,” Metsola said.

Alongside Zelensky, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel and former Polish President Lech Wałęsa were named Distinguished Members of the European Order of Merit.”

Oleksandra Matviichuk was recognized in the Member category alongside José Andrés (Chef and founder of the NGO “World Central Kitchen”), basketball player Giannis Antetokounmpo, and members of the U2 band.

The Honourable Member category includes, among others, Moldova’s President Maia Sandu, former President of the European Central Bank Jean-Claude Trichet, former President of Ireland Mary Robinson, and Secretary of State of the Holy See Pietro Parolin.

The European Parliament noted that the European Order of Merit is the first award of its kind established by an EU institution. It was created last year to mark the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration as a civilian award for individuals who have made a significant contribution to European integration or to the promotion and defence of European values.

The official award ceremony is scheduled to take place during the 18-21 May European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg.
