Hungary summons Ukrainian ambassador

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has announced that Hungary has summoned Ukraine’s ambassador over what he described as the alleged “open manhunt” of ethnic Hungarians for mobilization.

According to Ukrinform, this was reported by Hungarian government spokesperson Zoltán Kovács on the social media platform X.

“Minister of Foreign Affairs Péter Szijjártó announced that Hungary has summoned Ukraine’s ambassador over the ongoing forced conscription in the neighboring country, after two more ethnic Hungarian young men fell victim to it,” the post reads.

According to Szijjártó, in Ukraine, an “open manhunt is underway on the streets in order to sustain the war”. He claimed that one man from Berehove, who also holds Hungarian citizenship, was “taken away despite having an official exemption,” while another young man of Hungarian origin with mental health issues was allegedly “abducted and has since disappeared.”

Szijjártó stressed that Hungary summoned the Ukrainian ambassador to protest what he described as forced conscription and “the open street manhunt,” which he claimed “regularly has Hungarian victims.”

The Hungarian foreign minister also stated that “a completely hopeless and senseless war is taking place in Ukraine, and Brussels is pouring money into it without counting.” He again called for an immediate end to the war.

As previously reported by Ukrinform, last year Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described as manipulative statements by Hungarian media regarding the death of Ukrainian serviceman of Hungarian origin Yosyp Shebeshten, who was alleged to have died after being beaten at a territorial recruitment center and as a result of forced mobilization.
