Moldovan parliament adopts declaration in support of Ukraine
That is according to Moldpres, Ukrinform reports.
Sixty-five lawmakers supported the document. Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu noted that Moldova stands in solidarity with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people.
"February 24 marked four years since the start of the brutal and unjustified invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation. This is a war of aggression that brings death, destruction and suffering to millions of people. Thousands of civilians have been killed, children abducted, hospitals and schools bombed, and cities turned into ruins. The Republic of Moldova was, is and will remain in solidarity with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. We are grateful to our neighbors for the courage with which they defend their freedom, their country and their future, and for the fact that through their resistance they are defending peace and security across the entire region, including the Republic of Moldova," he said.
According to Grosu, Ukraine continues to support Moldova even during the war. He mentioned in particular that a team of 40 Ukrainian doctors recently saved the life of a nine-month-old girl from Moldova.
According to the declaration, Moldova's parliament condemns the brutal actions of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, demands that the aggressor state be punished for the crimes it has committed, and supports Ukraine in achieving a just peace.
"We reaffirm the unwavering support of the Republic of Moldova for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders. We also emphasize the importance of continued support for Ukraine from international partners. Providing Ukraine with the necessary means to defend itself and repel the aggressor contributes both to strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities and to enhancing Europe's overall security. In this context, we once again stress the importance of further increasing sanctions pressure on the Russian Federation," the declaration states.
In addition, lawmakers called on the international community, national parliaments and governments to maintain unity, determination and consistency in supporting Ukraine. They also confirmed Moldova's readiness to strengthen interparliamentary cooperation within the Moldova-Ukraine-Romania regional cooperation format, known as the "Odesa Triangle."
The authors of the declaration stressed that the accession of both Moldova and Ukraine to the European Union is of strategic importance for the stability, security and sustainable development of the region and of Europe as a whole.
Earlier, the German Bundestag also reaffirmed its support for Ukraine through a resolution marking the fourth anniversary of the war. The Bundestag called on the German government to continue supporting Ukraine consistently, including by providing the necessary weapons systems, promoting Ukraine's EU membership and strengthening sanctions pressure on Russia.
