EU cannot yet name specific accession date for Ukraine – von der Leyen
The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, Ukrinform's correspondent reports.
"I understand very well that for you a clear date is also important. The date you set is your benchmark, that you want to match. You know that from our side, dates by themselves are not possible. But of course the support that you can reach your goal is absolutely clear on our side," she said.
She noted that the accession process is merit-based and that its pace depends on the candidate country. In her view, Ukraine is carrying out the necessary reforms in an outstanding manner, despite the complexity of their implementation.
"You need to convince many people to go for it, to modernize the country. It's for the benefit of the country. And it is deeply impressive to see the enormous progress Ukraine is making despite the war for their survival," von der Leyen emphasized.
As previously reported, President Volodymyr Zelensky had earlier stated that he wants to hear from European leaders a competitive date for Ukraine's accession to the EU.
