Pistorius sees no signs of Russia's readiness for peace
He stated this in an interview with RND (RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland), Ukrinform reports.
"When it comes to Ukraine, it must be acknowledged that the US president has brought movement into the peace talks. However, so far I see no signs that Russia seriously wants peace," he said.
Pistorius emphasized that Russia continues to bombard Ukraine with unprecedented intensity.
"During the talks in Abu Dhabi, Putin is bombing Ukraine in a way that has hardly been seen in this war. This has nothing to do with military confrontation anymore. It is terror aimed exclusively at the civilian population – in winter, at minus 20 degrees," Pistorius stated.
According to him, when it comes down to substance, Putin always sticks to his maximalist demands and shows no willingness to compromise anywhere.
Regarding the agreement on a week-long pause in attacks on Kyiv, Pistorius expressed serious doubts about Moscow's sincerity.
"If Putin were serious about the talks in Abu Dhabi, there would be no need to ask him. He would have stopped attacks not only on Kyiv due to the severe frost, but across the entire country. I have serious doubts that Moscow takes this pause in attacks even remotely seriously," he said.
As Ukrinform previously reported, German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz earlier stated that the key to ending the war lies in Moscow, and that Russia's readiness for compromise will emerge only when it feels clear and unwavering support for Ukraine from Europe and the West.
