Switzerland freezes Maduro's assets
This was stated in a press release published on the website of the Swiss Federal Council, according to Ukrinform.
"On 5 January 2026, the Federal Council decided to freeze any assets held in Switzerland by Nicolás Maduro and other persons associated with him with immediate effect. In doing so, the Federal Council aims to prevent an outflow of assets. The asset freeze does not affect members of the current Venezuelan government," the statement said.
The Swiss government added that if future courts determine that the funds were obtained illegally, Switzerland will take steps to ensure they benefit the people of Venezuela.
"The asset freeze is in addition to the sanctions against Venezuela that have been in place since 2018 under the Embargo Act," the government said.
The asset freeze takes effect on January 5 and will remain in place for four years, pending further announcements.
As Ukrinform reported, explosions were heard in the Venezuelan capital Caracas on the morning of January 3, causing power outages in some areas of the city.
Later, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the United States conducted a large-scale operation in which a special forces unit detained Maduro and his wife.
