Ukraine reaffirms its support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia and warns all states against actions that violate international law and could destabilize the region.

This was stated by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Heorhii Tykhyi, in a comment to Ukrinform.

“In the context of recent events related to Somaliland, Ukraine reaffirms its support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia in accordance with its Constitution, the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, and the Charter of the United Nations,” Tykhyi said.

He recalled that Ukraine and Somalia established diplomatic relations this year, emphasizing that this was done on the basis of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“We caution all states against violations of the norms and principles of international law, which create dangerous precedents with far-reaching consequences for peace and stability in the Horn of Africa, across the African continent, and around the world,” the Foreign Ministry spokesman emphasized.

He added that Ukraine calls on the parties to resolve their long-standing differences through diplomatic means.

As reported by Ukrinform, Israel became the first country to recognize the self-proclaimed Somaliland as a sovereign state.

Israel's actions were condemned by Egypt and Turkey, and the Somali Foreign Ministry called the decision a “deliberate attack” on the country's sovereignty that would undermine peace in the region. The African Union shares this view, adding that Somaliland “remains an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia,” which is a member of the AU.

US President Donald Trump responded to the news by stating in an interview with the New York Post that he is against the United States recognizing Somaliland.
