President: War with Russia to end when Ukraine receives security guarantees
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky stated this while speaking with journalists in response to a question about whether martial law would end in the event of a ceasefire, as reported by a Ukrinform correspondent.
“First of all, we all want the war to end. And then martial law will end as well, and only in that way. But the termination of martial law will come at the moment when Ukraine obtains security guarantees,” he said.
Zelensky drew attention to the fact that, with a neighbour such as Russia, there remains a risk of renewed aggression.
“What are security guarantees? Why are we devoting so much time to them now? They mean monitoring by partners and their physical presence. I believe we are seriously committed; we are discussing this with our partners, how we can finalise all the documents and, if we still find an opportunity together with the Americans, Europeans, and allies to sign 20 points to end the war… I am determined that, at that very moment, we will simultaneously receive security guarantees. That is, we will not waste time,” the President said.
According to the President, the moment Ukraine receives them [the security guarantees], “this will be a signal for all of us that the war has ended.”
“Of course, the timing will be influenced by the understanding and position of our military command. We discussed this at the outset. They must say that all the infrastructure is ready — ready for lifting martial law,” Zelensky said.
As reported, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, stated that ironclad security guarantees are the most crucial element for peace negotiations.
