UN identifies factors complicating resolution of armed conflicts
This was stated in an interview with Ukrinform by Rosemary DiCarlo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs.
“Conflicts are more complex than they were. They start between two countries and then spread throughout their region. More actors join in, making them increasingly difficult to resolve. There are many other problems, such as the development of weapons systems,” she said.
DiCarlo emphasized that even during the Cold War, conflicts could be resolved faster than today, and the current global situation is very complex. She illustrated this using the example of the civil war in Sudan, noting that her department now has to work with numerous stakeholders.
“In Sudan, for example, you have the African Union, the League of Arab States, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the UN, and various member states all trying to resolve the issue. We need greater unity among our effortsthe UN deputy secretary-general stated.
As reported by Ukrinform, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul warned that achieving peace in Ukraine should not come at the expense of voluntarily giving up Ukrainian territory, as this would further encourage Russia to expand its aggression.
