Zelensky to EU Enlargement Summit: I hope Ukraine will become EU member by 2030
He stated this while addressing participants in the EU Enlargement Summit, held in Brussels, speaking online from the Pokrovsk front, Ukrinform reports.
When asked where Ukraine and the EU would be in 2030 and whether he would be the president to lead Ukraine into the European Union, Zelensky replied: "First of all, I would like to believe that Ukraine will join the EU earlier than 2030. It may sound like science fiction to you, but at one time defending Ukraine's independence from Russia also seemed like science fiction."
He said it would be fair for Ukraine to become a full-fledged member of the EU after the war ends.
"Of course, I would like to be the president under whom Ukraine joins the EU. But that, of course, is not the main priority. The main thing is that Ukraine joins the EU and whoever the president is at that time is already another question," Zelensky said.
Earlier today Zelensky said that Ukraine was confidently moving toward EU membership and was ready to open negotiation clusters 1, 2, and 6 following the publication of the European Commission's enlargement report.
Hungary, meanwhile, is blocking the launch of Ukraine's EU accession talks by invoking the EU's unanimity rule on enlargement decisions.
