European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen met with U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly to discuss Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and ways to increase pressure on Moscow.

According to a Ukrinform correspondent, the European Commission’s press service published von der Leyen’s statement.

Von der Leyen described having a “good discussion with President Trump on the margins of the UN General Assembly” during which both sides discussed “Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine” and agreed on the need to “cut Russia's revenues from fossil fuels”.

Von der Leyen recalled that this is the aim of the EU’s 19th sanctions package against Russia.

“We tighten the pressure, banning imports of Russian LNG into European markets and targeting refineries, oil traders and refineries in third countries.  By 2027, Europe will have turned the page on Russian fossil fuels for good,” the Commission President stressed.

She added that together with Trump, they also addressed Kremlin provocations, including regular incursions into European airspace.

“These are clear attempts to test our response,” von der Leyen said, adding that the EU is accelerating its defense efforts to strengthen its eastern flank.

According to her, the EU’s eastern flank “must serve as shield for both Europe and NATO”.

Von der Leyen separately thanked Trump for his commitment to addressing the plight of Ukraine’s missing children.

“Europe and the United States will work hand in hand to bring them back,” she said.
