Immediate ceasefire required - UN Secretary-General responds to shelling of Yarova

Responding to a question from a Ukrinform correspondent in New York about what message the UN Secretary-General would like to send to Putin in this context and in connection with the intensification of shelling of the civilian population and the Russian dictator's unwillingness to take a constructive position on ending the war, Dujarric emphasized António Guterres' call for an immediate ceasefire. 

He said that the message remained the same — to move seriously towards a ceasefire that would bring the conflict to an end and ensure that Ukraine was safe within its internationally recognized borders.

The spokesperson for the Secretary-General stressed that ending the war had to be consistent with international law and relevant UN resolutions, noting that this was what would bring a just and lasting peace.

As reported by Ukrinform, Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine Matthias Schmale condemned the horrific Russian strike in Donetsk region, which killed and injured dozens of civilians.
