NATO–Ukraine Council: MFA outlines results of meeting in Brussels

Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine Serhii Boiev and Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Oleksii Serhieiev, who joined the session online, provided allies with detailed updates on the current security situation, an assessment of Russia’s latest tactics, and its likely future plans.

Serhieiev briefed participants on the consequences of recent Russian attacks on Ukraine, including the number of killed and wounded civilians and the scale of infrastructure destruction.

Boiev emphasized that Russia is significantly ramping up weapons production, in particular cruise missiles, drones, and artillery. He also noted that North Korea and Iran continue to provide substantial assistance to Russia.

“The Ukrainian side called on NATO member states to provide necessary assistance for strengthening Ukraine’s air defense, in particular the Patriot system and missiles for them. The need for long-range missiles was also emphasized,” the MFA stated.

Allies were further urged to increase investments in Ukraine’s defense industry, especially drone production. With sufficient funding, Ukraine can produce a significant number of additional capabilities, the ministry stressed.

Representatives of NATO member states strongly condemned Russia’s massive strikes on Ukrainian cities, civilian facilities, and civilians, stressing that such actions demonstrate Moscow’s lack of desire for peace. They emphasized the need to maintain pressure on Russia and assured that they would continue supporting Ukraine and working to ensure the sustainable and timely supply of essential weapons for Ukraine.

With the winter and heating season approaching, the Allies highlighted the importance of protecting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and pledged to provide the necessary support.

As reported earlier, at Ukraine’s request and in response to recent large-scale Russian airstrikes, an extraordinary meeting of the NATO–Ukraine Council was scheduled in Brussels for September 1.
