Ukraine and a united Europe will face major consolidation and a powerful armed resistance against Russia, while the time for diplomatic resolution has not yet come.

Former President of Ukraine (2005–2010) Viktor Yushchenko shared his comments with Ukrinform regarding the meeting between the Presidents of the United States and Ukraine, as well as European leaders, who gathered in Washington to discuss pathways to ending the war in Ukraine.

“My views on negotiations with Trump are pessimistic. Under current circumstances, the diplomatic path is not ready. I am convinced that neither Putin nor his inner circle feels sufficient sanctions pressure. They have not faced financial restrictions or many other international constraints, which is why they are not prepared for a diplomatic process or peace talks,” Yushchenko stated.

He expressed confidence that “Ukraine and united Europe will undergo major consolidation, face significant armed resistance, and new, effective sanctions (against Russia – ed.). The time will come when Putin—or whoever succeeds him—will seek diplomatic resolution and forgiveness. Though I do not need his forgiveness. Let him ask forgiveness from those to whom he brought death and suffering,” emphasized the former Ukrainian President.

As reported by Ukrinform, on August 18, talks took place at the White House, beginning with a bilateral meeting between the Presidents of Ukraine and the United States. The discussions later expanded to include European leaders: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, French President Emmanuel Macron, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
