Rutte: Arms deal sends strong message to Kremlin about US-Europe unity

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that the decision to proceed with arms sales sends a clear message to Putin about the unity between the United States and Europe, and that they will "do whatever it takes for Ukraine."

He made these remarks in an interview with Fox News on Monday, following his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, Ukrinform reports.

"If I was in the Kremlin today, I would not be too happy because this is a clear signal that President Trump is serious. He wants peace. He hates the fact that so many people lose their lives in Ukraine," Rutte said.

He stressed that the White House's decision to sell weapons to NATO countries for distribution to Ukraine was a "significant" moment for Europe amid stalled peace negotiations to end Russia's war.

Rutte told journalists after his meeting with Trump in Washington on July 14 that an agreement had been reached on weapons support for Ukraine.

Rutte praised Trump's efforts to break the deadlock in communication with Putin and give the Kremlin leader a chance to demonstrate seriousness about resolving the war in Ukraine.
