Canada has announced a new defense assistance package for Ukraine totaling 2 billion Canadian dollars (approximately 1.5 billion U.S. dollars).

According to an Ukrinform correspondent, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney made the announcement ahead of his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during the G7 summit.

Carney said that Canada would be providing additional military aid, including drones, helicopters, and various types of ammunition. In total, the direct military assistance to Ukraine will exceed 2 billion Canadian dollars, he said.

He also stated that Canada was significantly expanding its sanctions against Russia. The new measures will target several individuals and more than 40 entities in Russia and other countries that are helping Moscow evade sanctions. In addition, restrictions will be imposed on over 200 vessels belonging to the so-called "shadow fleet."

Carney also announced that Ukraine would receive a $2 billion loan, the interest on which will be covered using proceeds from frozen Russian assets. He stressed that this was Canada's contribution and that they would work with European and other allies to ensure broader participation. He stressed that Canada's support for Ukraine would remain steadfast until Ukrainians achieved a just peace.
