House Speaker Johnson backs efforts to impose ‘bone-breaking’ sanctions on Russia

Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Mike Johnson has expressed his support for renewed efforts by Congress to impose "bone-breaking" sanctions on the Kremlin over Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s brutal war against Ukraine.

This was reported by NYP and relayed by Ukrinform.

“There’s many members of Congress that want us to sanction Russia as strongly as we can,” Johnson told reporters on Monday. “And I’m an advocate of that.”

The Speaker’s backing of legislation aimed at punishing the Russian regime comes amid a bipartisan push in the Senate to adopt “bone-breaking sanctions” on Russia, according to the publication.

Senators Lindsey Graham (Republican) and Richard Blumenthal (Democrat) have co-authored a bill in the upper chamber that proposes a 500% tariff on any country purchasing Russian energy products.

Graham expects the Senate “to start moving” the bill forward this week.

The bill is currently under consideration by the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee .

As Ukrinform reported, during a press conference in Kyiv, Graham stated that he has 82 U.S. senators as co-sponsors of the bill, which aims to introduce bone’breaking sanctions not only against Russia but also against countries that purchase Russian oil, gas, uranium, and other products.

This week, Graham already met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to discuss coordination between the EU and the U.S. regarding sanctions in response to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
