Zelensky: Only strong US and EU sanctions can make Russia cease fire
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated this in his nightly video address, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.
"Russia's nightly attacks are becoming increasingly audacious and large-scale. Over 900 attack drones launched against Ukraine in just three days, along with ballistic and cruise missiles — there's no military logic to this. It is a clear political choice — Putin's choice, Russia's choice — to continue the war and destroy lives," Zelensky said.
He also referenced a recent meeting with Russian representatives in Istanbul.
"Now the Russians are reportedly drafting proposals for a peace memorandum. They've spent over a week on this. There's a lot of talk about diplomacy. But when these efforts are accompanied by constant Russian strikes, killings, assaults, and preparations for new offensives, it is clearly a diagnosis. Russia deserves full-scale pressure — everything that can be done to limit its military capabilities," he added.
Zelensky also expressed gratitude to international partners who continue to support Ukraine.
"I thank everyone around the world who understands this. New and strong sanctions against Russia — sanctions from the United States, from Europe, and from all who seek peace — are the only reliable way to force Russia not just to agree to a ceasefire, but to start showing respect. They must all respect the world. Putin must start respecting those he negotiates with. Right now, he is merely playing with diplomacy and diplomats. This must be changed," Zelensky said.
