Russia's rotating presidency proves UNSC loses relevance - Ukraine’s NSDC secretary

Russia's presidency of the UN Security Council goes against any logic, showing that the organizaion has already lost its relevance.

That’s according to Oleksiy Danilov, Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, Ukrinform reports.

"This institution (the UN Security Council - ed.), currently chaired by Russia, with its norms and rules that were fixed after the Second World War, has already lost its relevance. It is no longer the influential body whose decisions are binding for all countries. When an aggressor power, a terrorist state that has been killing children, chairs the UN Security Council, these things are generally incompatible with any logic, not to mention justice. Where is this justice then?" Danilov told the national telethon.

He emphasized that the video showing the Russians beheading Ukrainian POWs should be played as a screensaver at the meetings of the UN Security Council, now chaired by the Russian Federation.

"This video once again showed that fascists are fascists. I would very much like this video to become a screen saver at the meetings of the UN Security Council, which is chaired by the Russian Federation. When people in the 21st century cut off someone’s head when their victim is still alive, and their representatives chair the UN Security Council, this is nonsense. Some totally incomprehensible things are happening in this world," NSDC secretary said.

As reported, on April 1, Russia kicked off its rotating presidency of the UNSC.

The Security Council consists of five permanent members of the UN, including Russia, Great Britain, France, the United States, and China, who enjoy a veto right, as well as 10 member countries joining the body on a rotating basis.

As reported by Ukrinform, the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the UN stated that the Russian presidency of the UN Security Council amid the reports of brutal executions of Ukrainian prisoners of war by the Russian military significantly reduces the authority of the United Nations.

As reported, two videos of the execution of Ukrainian defenders appeared on the Internet. The Security Service of Ukraine has launched a pre-trial investigation into the video of the Russians beheading a Ukrainian prisoner. Law enforcement agencies of Ukraine are taking measures to identify the persons who committed this terrible crime.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine appealed to the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court with a demand for urgent attention to the fact of the execution of a Ukrainian prisoner by the Russian military in the context of the investigation of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Ukraine by the Russians.

For her part, the German Ambassador to Ukraine, Anka Feldhusen, said Germany would make every effort to restore justice and bring Russian war criminals to accountability for the crimes they committed in Ukraine.
