Guterres wants peace between Ukraine and Russia only based on UN Charter

UN Secretary-General António Guterres believes that Ukraine–Russia dialogue is necessary which would contribute to the establishment of peace based on the UN Charter – that is, under the condition of the full restoration of the integrity of Ukraine within internationally recognized borders.

As Ukrinform reports with reference to the UN press service, Guterres made a corresponding statement at a press conference in Phnom Penh as part of his activities in Cambodia for the 2022 ASEAN Summit.

As he stressed, it is very important to create the conditions for progressively re-establishing dialogue that will lead to a future where peace will prevail, adding “not any kind of peace – peace based on the values of the UN Charter, and peace based on international law”.

Guterres once again confirmed the clear position of the UN regarding Ukraine: the Russian invasion is a violation of the UN Charter and Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
