Ukraine to be priority during Japan's G7 presidency next year

Ukraine's First Deputy Foreign Minister Emine Dzhaparova and Director-General of the European Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan Masashi Nakagome have discussed further support for Ukraine in the face of Russia's full-scale aggression and priorities during Japan's presidency of the Group of Seven.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry's press service said this in a statement following a meeting held between the two diplomats on November 7, Ukrinform reports.

Dzhaparova emphasized the importance of further support for Ukraine ahead of the difficult winter period. She noted that by launching missile strikes on energy infrastructure, Russia seeks to deepen the humanitarian crisis and cause a new wave of refugees fleeing Ukraine.

She thanked the Japanese side for consistent financial and humanitarian assistance to the Ukrainian people, as well as for efforts to increase sanctions pressure on Russia.

"Today, Ukraine and Japan maintain a very intensive political dialogue. I hope that our relations will soon reach the level of strategic partnership," she said.

Nakagome confirmed Tokyo's unchanging policy regarding comprehensive support for Ukraine. In particular, Japan will continue to provide strong humanitarian support and demining assistance. He also promised that Ukraine would be a priority during Japan's chairmanship of the Group of Seven in 2023.

"We will continue to unite the G7 for further strong support for Ukraine and keep a tough sanctions policy," he said.

Dzhaparova also praised Japan's active participation in the activities of the International Crimea Platform.
