The Ukrainian Embassy in the Netherlands is working with Dutch law enforcement officers to find out the circumstances surrounding the detention of a Ukrainian citizen, the captain of a sailing yacht, on suspicion of smuggling illegal migrants, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko has told Ukrinform.

He said that the Dutch Coast Guard detained the Ukrainian on September 17. A court ruled to detain him for two months.

The Dutch border police have launched a pretrial investigation.

"The Embassy of Ukraine in the Netherlands is cooperating with Dutch law enforcement agencies to clarify all the circumstances of this case and to ensure compliance with the procedural rights of the citizen," Nikolenko said.

Earlier reports said that Dutch law enforcers detained a yacht with Ukrainians suspected of smuggling migrants from Albania.
